I've watched with cursory interest (sorry, foregone conclusion) the Sotomayor hearings.
There is no way that the GOP can derail this nomination, the only fun comes watching Alabama bigot...errrr...Senator Jeff Sessions have to hold his tongue.
Sessions, you know the guy: KKK sympathizer, failed federal circuit judge nominee and generally all-around swell guy, has made it a one-man mission to discredit Sotomayor, Pres. Obama's first SCOTUS nominee.
Personally, I think the fact that he is basically leading the fight is a tell-tale sign. His kind of bigotry still flies in 'Bama on a covert basis. To those who will object: YES, I've lived there.
In Sessions' world, you know the Negro and the Mexicans (typical umbrella term), don't have the wherewithal to battle back on an intellectual basis.
This tool may not learn his lesson after this exchange:
Sen. Jeff Sessions (R., Ala.), seeking to discredit Judge Sonia Sotomayor’s judicial philosophy, cited her 2001 "wise Latina" speech, and contrasted the view that ethnicity and sex influence judging with that of Judge Miriam Cedarbaum, who "believes that judges must transcend their personal sympathies and prejudices."
Sen. Jeff Sessions (R., Ala.), ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, questions Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor, during her confirmation hearing before the committee Tuesday. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R., Utah) is at left.
"So I would just say to you, I believe in Judge Cedarbaum’s formulation," Sessions told Sotomayor.
The good judge's reply:
"My friend Judge Cedarbaum is here," Sotomayor riposted, to Sessions’ apparent surprise. "We are good friends, and I believe that we both approach judging in the same way, which is looking at the facts of each individual case and applying the law to those facts."
Think this bigoted redneck bastard is embarrassed?
