If you thought defending the so-called "sanctity of marriage" was just about gay people... well, usually it is. But, this time, our rightwing culture warriors have focused on the comments section of the Internets Latest Web Sensation, Jill and Kevin's Wedding Entrance Dance, to show us how Hetero Weddings themselves can be used to undermine the sanctity of marriage! Which, if you haven't seen it, it is totally awesome and you should. In this writer's opinion it is the Best Wedding March/Entrance EVAH! So, here:
As you might think, most of the comments are positive. However, some of the comments are appalled that anyone would DARE depart from a traditional ceremony. One comment was shocked that someone would "do a handstand in front of the crucifix." And here I thought any weird "dancing" issues left in our culture were settled by the movie Footloose over 25 years ago. But, maybe it is time for a remake? The lesson may have been forgotten (or, more likely, never learned...) by some of our fellow citizens. And, can I just say, while we are on the subject, "You Go, Kevin Bacon!"
Another comment i read was all, "How can the bride focus on the importance of the day if she's dancing?" I mean, What the F---? I never knew that weddings were for bride's to "focus" on "how important it is." I figure you did all that BEFORE you informed the parents that it was time to spend a small fortune on a wedding. And, I thought a wedding was for celebrating the love and union of two people as a family and making it official for the whole community. Silly me.
And, of course, other commenters wailed about how playing Chris Brown (ie, black/urban) music IN CHURCH--forchrissakes!--(and even worse, DANCING to it) was "undermining the sanctity of marriage." Yes, indeed, there was some racial subtext there since this was clearly a white community having a wedding. Of course, some people wouldn't be happy unless they were singing in Gregorian Chants to a pipe organ. They seem to have an affinity to the Dark Ages.
But, aside from that, really? Weddings themselves now have the magical power to undermine the ultra-fragile 'sanctity' of marriage? Not just gay weddings, mind. Now, it includes weddings that don't follow the orthodox, stale ceremony. As a (full disclosure) gay man, I'm kinda pissed, because I thought only WE had that power! But, now I learn that any hetero couple in America can undermine the sanctity of marriage, too! (for instructions on how to undermine the Sanctity of Marriage at your upcoming wedding, SEE ABOVE VIDEO!)
Some of the people in our nation truly are nutjobs, who can't enjoy the life God apparently gave them for all the rules and religious doctrine they feel they and everyone else must observe to fit their inflated sense of piety to their particular Sky Being.
IN any event, everyone should see the video. It really is awesome. And, if you see some of the rightwing trolls in the comments, please take the time to downrate a few while you are there.
