Yeah, everyone knows who Richard Simmons is - the guy who lost weight by starving himself til he fainted dead away in the street, and who then spent years trying to figure out how to maintain a healthy and fit weight:
Eating better and moving more. Since then, he's become a cheerleader and poster child for weight loss.
Flamboyant, emotional and enthusiastic, Richard is not everyone's cup of tea. But he is sincere.
I'd sweated along to Richard's "Sweatin to the Oldies" videos, and watched him on tv from time to time. I joined the "club" at his website a couple of years ago, and took advantage of a special offer they'd extended earlier this year. In doing so, I was in touch with one of his web-people, and sent her a couple of emails and a before and now photo,
In January, Richard emailed and asked for my phone number, and then called me.
When he phoned the first time, he said Baaaa-aaarb.... Sweet Baaaa-aaarb.... Yeah, I've kept the message.
When we finally connected, we discussed how I've lost the weight. He wasn't completely familiar with MF, but was vaguely so. We discussed people who'd had surgery - he told me of someone who had paid $35,000 for the surgery, and lost 15 pounds.
Crud.
We discussed my goal. I think he was suggesting I stop now, actually... and when we kept talking, I think he understood and concurred with how I was approaching it, at least for now.
We talked about loose skin. He said that this year is the year of toning. I think he's right, there. I'm trying!
I told him that my real trigger for starting was my (now nearly 4 year old) nephew... the older nephew is a string bean, long and lean. Danny is a mini-me - short legged, chunky, easily focused on food that should be avoided. (For Danny: pastrami or bacon. LOL.) That I wanted to show him that being morbidly obese should not be a viable option. I love that little kid.
He told me that I'm Cinderella, and that if he were there with me, he'd be putting a glass slipper on my foot. He told me to save his email address, and stay in touch - to please give my success story, and update it... and to contact him, if I ran into trouble.
And that was my lovely, supportive phone call from Richard Simmons. And now, for your viewing pleasure: Mr. Simmons on Whose Line is it Anyway?
