The Abjeez are an Iranian pop group who live in Sweden and sometimes the US. "Abjeez" is slang for "sisters." The two young ladies are in fact sisters. In the aftermath of the US invasion of Iraq they produced the song and subsequent video "DemoKracy." Fortunately they are translated in this video.
This summer they produced another song and video in the aftermath of the Iranian elections. Outside of these two protests videos they have an excellent fusion repertoire which combines many styles of music. "Biyaa" in this context means roughly "come on."
Abjeez--DemoKracy
Abjeez--Biyaa
Biyaa- Come On
Come and join us once and for all, let’s be honest, let’s be true
Join the force of love and see, what’s in there waiting for you!
Even in the "zoor khooneh" (Iranian traditional sports hall) our men tend to tolerate
Barefooted, with a waist-cloth, wrestling men of the same weight
You walk with your kneeguards; carrying chains and clubs, wearing a mask
Well done brother, what a champ! Is that what you call bravery I ask?
It’s easy to strike and brake, kill and burn, destroy and chase
I guess God can’t recognize, a properly hidden face!
Go on hit and kill, let’s see how long it takes,
Before your betrayed heart, melts down and brakes!
Let’s see when your hands will feel ashamed of your own zeal
Let’s see when your betrayed soul will wake up and start to heal
Don’t worry, you too are the "dust and mote" of this land
Unmask your face, see the light, see the truth and take my hand
Feel the compassion, unity calls at this hour
The power of love is higher than the love of power!
Come and join us once and for all, let’s be honest, let’s be true
Join the force of love and see what greatness is waiting for you!
I've been watching these videos a great deal lately to draw inspiration and to remind myself, that as much as I am fascinated by the recent history of Iran--the future belongs to the youth. Even though they live outside of Iran, the Abjeez capture an element of the youth perspective. They do not think the West or the US has the answers, and at the same time they long for a different future for Iran. What answers will emerge in the next few months and years? I watch and wait, and hope.
