Are you nuts? I'm hearing a lot of people say "Well at least Bush and the Republicans got their stuff passed!" as if that is a notch on their belt. Do you know how Bush actually got stuff passed and the effect it had on his party and the country?
George W. Bush, Cheney, Delay, etc., were indeed great at pushing through whatever batshit insane idea they had into law. You know why and how? They took no prisoners because they were absolutely sure they were right and that there would be no unintended consequences or negative effects. They were more often than not completely wrong. How did they push that legislation and a war? They took out moderates at the knees, lied about the substance of the legislation, and lied about the effects.
Now to be sure it was effective. They got wars, terrible fiscal policy, education policy, etc etc. But what about the little thing called consequences? Well...
Wake up progressives! Don't you remember the consequences of the Bush actions? They ran out the moderates making light red districts pick-ups for Democrats, got investigated for all sorts of crimes because they let anyone in that got results no matter what their character, and pushed through legislation and policy that was incredibly negative and became very unpopular.
It is always dangerous to mention Bush in a positive light on this matter because often people forget to add on the fact that he destroyed his party that went on to lose two consecutive landslide elections and was reduced to a regional party. That is what happens to parties that refuse to compromise, take opposition out at the knees in confident assurance that they alone have all the answers, and partake in divisive politics over inclusive politics.
President Bush destroyed his party's national credentials, cost many Republican politicians their jobs, won by the smallest margin for an incumbent president ever, and left with Nixon like approval ratings.
Do you really want President Obama to follow the Bush model of pushing through legislation and his agenda?
