how about we let you opt out your public plan so that you can procure your health insurance from your favorite private health insurance provider?
Judging by the number of those over 50 who oppose a public option there is clearly a demand for private health insurance among those nearing and into retirement. And we know how the free market always provides for the most efficient production and allocation of goods and services, like health insurance, in response to consumer demand.
According to this morning's NY Times:
"Audrey Steele, 82, from New Bedford, said she does not want the government to get involved with health care because ''they just make a mess of everything,'"
Well, Ms. Steele, I see no reason why you should be forced into Medicare. I think any health care reform bill should provide men and women of your age with the option of obtaining your own coverage from the wonderful private insurance industry. It shouldn't really cost much and the government will save a ton not having to make such a mess of providing your coverage.
I really don't think such a Medicare opt out would add much if any cost to health care reform and it would sure seem to be what a lot of these teabagging seniors want. I am all for it, if we also provide the option for those under age 65 to enroll in Medicare. Fair is fair.
