So I was sitting at my computer half-listening to news and heard this goofy soundbite. Thought I would post it on my blog and make a funny retort and instead ended up making a long run-on rant about health care. Here is my unintentional product:
(Conservative pundit on tv talking about healthcare):
"...and America needs to stand up and TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK!"
(Let me finish the thought):
"...from the massive plurality of Americans THAT FUCKING WANT HEALTHCARE REFORM*"
*see every poll, the 2008 election, and common fucking sense, you horrible buzzard
(Postscript):
So I'm really sick of the fact that this debate has been going on for not just my lifetime but my dad's and my grandfather's. Why should we provide healthcare to everyone? Because we fucking CAN. The measure of a society is not the strength of its forces but the level to which it can hold up its citizenry. The quality of life it can provide. We want to be the greatest country on the planet? God and Caesar combined? Then make it so that people don't have to lose half their livelihood because they develop cancer or have to spend their life in voluntary impoverishment because they were born with a recessive gene.
Don't make them die for money.
You want to have a hissy fit about deficit or costs or government intrusion? EAT IT. I had to be marginalized back when I thought we shouldn't throw ourselves into deep debt for a war I thought pointless or imbalanced tax cuts I thought absurd. My turn now. At least I'm going to end up helping out everyone and dragging you, kicking and screaming (oftentimes literally, apparently), into a better standard of living instead of just pissing it away for the immediate gain.
The current reforms? The public option? The computerization of records? Great, sure. Not my ideal; not enough in my opinion, not what I really want for everyone. But hey, it's a step. I'm one of those crazies that want a universal or single payer or just otherwise open and free healthcare system. It should be massively expensive to government and free of charge to the people benefiting from it minus the taxes to sustain it. Just like military. Because it's just as imperative to keeping people alive and healthy. And yes, I'll pay. Gladly.
I spent like a fifth of my life with someone who had a horrid disease that kept her in poverty and even the systems in place to help her meant she had to choose whether to work a lot and get sick or do nothing and get money. To balance how much she worked versus what percentage of her benefits would be taken away. To be stuck.
Socialism is just a word that's been made contorted and villainous in your head. Quit the hysteria and close your eyes and imagine what your idealized society would be and tell me if the word Aetna pops up at all.
Speak your mind. Sure. Argue your heartfelt opinion. Sure. But quit this fucking game.
