This will not be a long, winding diary full of endless quotes from the Bible or mounds of preaching material - so by all means, please add as many relevant quotes from Jesus as you find to reinforce the point. This will, however, be an appeal to those on the "Christian Right" who seem intent upon quashing legislation that will provide health care and insurance for every American - thus establishing quality health care as a right instead of a privilege bestowed upon the affluent.
Jesus was very clear in his instructions to followers regarding wealth and salvation:
"What must I do to inherit eternal life?"
"If you want to be perfect, go sell what you have and give it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come and follow me."
It seems to me that conservatives are so caught up in the "don't take it...it's mine..." mindset that they have forgotten their explicit instructions from the Son of God. He didn't say "Only give up a little of your wealth" or "35% is enough...even if the poor are starving or without medical care". He said "go sell what you have and give it to the poor".
There is no ambiguity. There is no alternative. If you are to act in accordance with the principles of Christ, you must not let your obscene greed for wealth overcome your obligation to give to the poor.
Sometimes this means paying for health care via increased taxes. I ask you, conservatives:
Are you really willing to stroll up to the pearly gates and tell God and his son Jesus Christ that you needed a second house on the beach in lieu of giving some of the wealth God has blessed you with to take care of the sick?
