I've been following the disruption of Town Hall meetings on health care reform, primarily by those opposed to it. I think the problem is that those disrupting the meetings aren't reading the Bill of Rights correctly.
What's bizarre is wailing of the right-wing echo chamber when, very rarely, those who disrupt meetings are removed from the meeting. The latest was
Removed from the forum because he continually interrupted Shea-Porter and others in Manchester was Carl Tomanelli of Londonderry, who objected when her staff passed out health care stickers before the event began.
I think I've figured out the problem.
As we know, the right-wing echo chamber is a true lover of the Bill of Rights. Granted that it only directly applies to government, but it is a model which they seek to follow.
I think the echo chamber's problem is that they've been copying over and over a mistake. Here's how the first amendment goes on free speech.
Congress shall make no law ....or abridging the freedom of speech...
The echo chamber got just one word wrong, see:
Congress shall make no law ....or abridging the freedom from speech...
Now if they could just understand that the freedom is not to drown out those who call a meeting by continually disrupting it, everyone would be a lot better off.
