I realize animal cruelty is part of human life and sympathy for animals risks provoking the GOP and the Republican wing of the Democratic Party. But still....
AP and HuffPo have gotten hold of video showing how the hundreds of millions of male baby chicks are disposed of each year in the poultry/egg business. They are ground up alive.
Somehow my grilled chicken won't taste the same anymore. Growing up I thought I learned that pointed vs. rounded eggs determined sex and always assumed male eggs were discarded. I wish I had always at least known of this practice to modify my diet.
This strikes me as a cruelty vs. cost thing. I'm sure a tiny amount of research money could be spent to find a way to produce only female chicks.
Recs much appreciated so more people will at least know of the problem.
"There is, unfortunately, no way to breed eggs that only produce female hens," said the group's spokesman, Mitch Head. "If someone has a need for 200 million male chicks, we're happy to provide them to anyone who wants them. But we can find no market, no need."
Using a grinder, Head said, "is the most instantaneous way to euthanize chicks."
