Sorry if this has been diaried but I didn't see it, and it certainly seems noteworthy. Also, I use the term we loosely, because I myself did nothing to help with this election--kudos to those who did.
The hotly contested election for Iowa's 90th state house district was won by democrat Curt Hanson. Desmoinesdem gives a rundown on Mydd (please try to overcome any aversion you may to that site and read it). The state repubs and anti-gay marriage forces from around the country spent extensive time and resources on this race, trying to gain an advantage in their efforts to make gay marriage illegal in Iowa. They failed.
I understand that this election is not necessarily indicative of results in any other upcoming elections, but it did come at a time when Obama and democrats nationally are showing the lowest poll numbers they have in a while. Also, like the special election in NY-20 earlier this year, the repubs put huge emphasis on the race--the Iowa state republican chair said it was a must win. Yet the democrat prevailed.
This result also raises some doubt in my mind regarding the current polls we are seeing regarding who is likely to vote in the upcoming gubernatorial elections and next years mid-terms. In spite of claims that democrats are lacking in interest and energy, they showed up to vote, in large enough numbers to overcome a huge repub-conservative effort.
Let's take a moment to savor.
