Mmmmm. Yuck.
I love bacon.
Bacon hates us though. It raises our risk for heart disease, makes us fat, raises blood pressure, can cause cancer, even worsen arthritis.
But it tasted SOOO good!
It is the proverbial forbidden apple in the garden of life. It tempts us with its alluring sizzle and pulls us to it with a cartoon like hand of aroma. It is everywhere these days. Restaurants seem to be in competition to see who can supply more bacon. It’s on radio, TV, internet. Bacon is wrapped around seafood, beef, chicken and wild game. It’s in salads, soups, sauces and pizzas. Bacon used to be mainly seen at breakfast with an occasional appearance in a BLT or draped over mom’s meatloaf. But then it started to give even the most pesky virus a run for it’s money. Bacon infected and spread to every meal. There is a commercial for bacon wherein an actor portrays a man who is seeing a psychologist for a bacon addiction problem, instead of helping the man the therapist falls prey to the cured meat product as well. A local bar/restaurant even has a "bacon night" with free all you can eat bacon as a bar snack!
I repeat, I do love bacon, but c’mon! The world is presently in such a positive nutrition swing, exercising and eating well like never before due to the availability of fresh quality food at lower prices and a proliferation of information on healthy life styles. Yet bacon survives. A meat that is mostly fat, cured with carcinogenic nitrates and containing little or no nutritional value. Mmmmm!
I’m not judging you. I too have fallen to the wiles of this mesmerizing meat, this glorified pork rind, this delectable fried adipose. I’m just asking that we all step back and take a deep breath (without a piece of bacon in our mouths) and push back our need for bacon. I know it’s good, but it’s just not good for us.
Sorry piggy.
Please step away for the bacon,
FV
