I sent this email to President Obama today:
Mr. President,
It's high time for courage and integrity from you. Be brave now. A strong public option, right now, is the rock bottom minimum for real health care reform.
(We worked so hard to get you elected, but you have been a tragic disappointment so far.)
If you sell out adequate, immediate, health care on Wednesday, you betray not only your supporters and those Americans who are suffering and dying right now, you also betray your own potential to be a great president.
Don't be so timid. On the basis of your campaign positions, you were elected in a landslide, with majorities in both houses of Congress. There is no excuse for not delivering. Yet you haven't even put up a fight for what you said you believed in - you've simply abandoned the field to right wing crazies, and undercut your own supporters.
That right wing will never support you. For one thing, they despise weakness, and weakness is all you've ben displaying. They react to it like sharks smelling blood. It unsettles the whole country.
You only lose your supporters, the majority that elected you, with all this caving in, waffling, evading, and catering to the very economic interests that have been preying on your people. Nobody respects a wimp; nobody respects cowardice.
You've been comfortable throwing huge amounts of money at speculators and at un-thought-through foreign military occupations. Will you be stingy now about health care for your suffering people? Imagine your own daughters going without it!
Please be the leader we believed you were. Show us what you're made of. We'll fight with you again if you do.
