A message from a member of the Cranston School Committee.
Dear Concerned Citizens:
I am writing in response to several emails that I have received today concerning President Obama's speech on Tuesday. It appears that there is some misinformation circulating about this issue. I’d like to clear up any confusion about the president’s speech.
The speech is being delivered around lunch time. The directive given to the principals on Friday by administration was that the principals were to tape the speech and then have the teachers show it to their students at a more convenient time. This time is at the discretion of the teacher. It was suggested by the administration that the teachers review the speech so that they could devise an appropriate lesson for their class and or grade. They will then have discussion based on the speech.
Any student whose parent does not want them to view the speech will have an alternative lesson during that time.

I am not aware of any letters that may have gone out by individual principals. What I do know is the intention of the administration. I have received a copy of the memo that was sent by administration to the principals.
I cannot personally vouch for any principals interpretation of the superintendents directive. I spoke on Friday and again today with the superintendent and he explicitly expressed to me that no one has been told that they cannot show the speech. This decision was made by the administration and not the school committee. I can appreciate people's concerns in regard to what they may have heard. I hope this puts anyone's concerns to rest.
If you have further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact myself, your own school committee representative or the superintendent directly.
Sincerely,
Stephanie Culhane
