I grew up with two Republican parents, and lived and went to school in the suburbs of Los Angeles. There were no African Americans in the suburbs where I grew up. My father was a policeman in Los Angeles. I never heard any racial comments from him or my mother. Well, other than the story that my father told about arresting a black hooker who commented on my father’s balding by comparing the amount of "hair on her pussy" to the lack of hair on my father’s head. My mother and I thought that was hilarious.
The first time that I ever actually met an African American was when I was about 22 years old and went to work for the Los Angeles Municipal Court as a Judicial Secretary. There were seven of us. One of them was a black woman named Mildred. We became the best of friends. She was 6 foot 2 to my slightly less than 5 foot two. We had lunch together; we went out in the evening together.
After that I left the Los Angeles Superior Court and went to work for the California Court of Appeal as a secretary to a presiding justice. No African American Americans there. Hell, they didn’t even have female court clerks there at the time. About that time, I started law school. No African Americans there either. BTW, Vincent Bugliosi was my criminal law instructor. (I had to Google his name for the correct spelling and apparently he has written a book entitled "The Prosecution of George W. Bush For Murder.")
I had numerous jobs after that with various law firms in Los Angeles. No African Americans there either. I finally moved to Northern California and got appointed to the City’s Personal Board. My new best friend turned out to be a 6 foot 2 black woman.
It was so easy for me to vote for Obama. The fact that he is black never had any effect on me whatever. It hurts my heart to see the way that he is being treated and, yes, it is racial. I am so afraid that he will be assonated.
