We have a bill. Kerry Eleveld of The Advocate is reporting that Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) will be holding a press conference next Tuesday announcing the introduction of a bill that "amount[s] to a full repeal" of the Defense of Marriage Act." The bill reportedly has in the neighborhood of fifty co-sponsors, although their names have not been announced yet.
They say good things come in small packages, and being rather diminutive in stature myself I have to observe (with absolutely no disrespect meant) that when I met Congressman Nadler last month I was surprised to see that he is not a tall man. He has, however, revealed himself to be a giant in the field of securing civil rights for LGBT Americans. When I saw him in the lobby of the Pittsburgh Westin I went out of my way to thank him for his work on ENDA, and this announcement about DOMA makes him a hero in my book.
This isn't much of a diary, so I'll leave you with video of a commercial from MarriagEquality, an Irish group working to secure marriage rights for same-sex couples in Ireland. The video, entitled "Sinead's Hand," made quite a splash in Social Media Land last week for asking one simple question: How would you feel if you had to ask 4 million people for permission to marry?
