Does this sound racist to you?
Welcome to White Kos, a white, progressive sub-forum within the DailyKos community. Our goal is two-pronged:
- First, we want to bring issues in the white community to the forefront by compiling information from various sources such as news items, commentary articles, and our fellow Kossacks who publish diaries. We will occasionally have guest contributors, non-Kossacks, who would like to add to the conversation and knowledge-base.
- Second, we want to provide solutions to the issues raised. Issues such as education in urban areas, health care, wealth disparities, racial disparities, and voting education are just a few we'll tackle.
We hope White Kos will show the wealth of, and diverging, opinion within the white community, as well as link that to the whole world of the progressive community.
Please take the poll. Thanks.
By the way, I think White Kos is a great idea.
****UPDATE****
How is Black Kos different?
****UPDATE #2****
MLK told us to judge a person by the content of their character, not by the color of their skin. This means that you must become color-blind. Look past the skin.
If we are to become 'color-blind' as a society, how can we say it's okay to have a White Kos or a Black Kos? Creating either (or both) separates us based on our race. It becomes just one more division that will necessarily have to be undone before true equality and 'color-blindness' becomes a reality.
It is true that whites can (and do) post at Black Kos. But it is also true the entire purpose of Black Kos is to discuss things pertinent to black people. Therefore, right off the bat this diminishes what whites have to contribute at Black Kos because they never had the direct experience of being black.
Black Kos unites blacks with each other. But it does nothing to unite blacks with whites. Here's an example. Robinswing, one of the editors at Black Kos, wrote a diary that says it is up to white people to solve racism.
In my opinion, it is up to both. And that is what I am trying to say. Racism comes in all colors. That's all.
*****FINAL UPDATE*****
So, this diary has pretty much wound down now. The poll results are:
73% of you believe that White Kos sounds racist.
26% of you think White Kos doesn't sound racist.
Now, when we realize that I had taken the exact words from the front page of Black Kos and pasted them here, only changing the word "black" for the word "white" - what does that tell us?
It tells us there is a double standard here at Daily Kos. A sub-forum for black issues is okay but a sub-forum for white issues is not okay.
What does it mean?
Blacks receive special treatment here. Why?
Because of white guilt?
Something to ponder. Peace.
