I am from Indiana so I have become quite familiar with Rep. Mike Pence. You may have heard of him for the first time after seeing him on Countdown as the World's Worst Person as he thank a woman for comparing healthcare reform to Adolf Hitler
Well, you should know what he said in a townhall earlier this month.
During a townhall event, he touted his religious views and how they have impacted him as an individual. A lady stood up and asked a question, a question that we should all ask our congressman if they speak of their religious values. She asked him a basic question, "What would Jesus do?"
He laughed it off and ignored the basic premise of her question. When a reporter followed up with him after the event, saying that he avoided answering the question, he responded that he will ask Jesus in the afterlife.
You can listen to it here.
We need to keep pressing our congressman and others on this issue. They speak of their moral high ground, but they never quote the Gospels. They'll quote the Old Testament, they'll quote parts after the Gospels, but NEVER the Gospels. They need to be held accountable that their religious views are in complete contradictory to the teachings of Jesus.
"What would Jesus Do?" and "How much did Jesus charge for a copay?" are questions that needs to be asked to these people.
I asked the latter question to a coworker who talks religion, but is against healthcare reform. She was stunned and responded "I don't know, I wasn't there". I looked at her and said "seriously?" and informed her that people neevr quote the Gospels when speaking of what is right. She went on to say that Jesus did not cure everyone. I responded, "of course he didn't. He didn't have contact with everyone. But, did he refuse to heal someone?" She ended up quoting something from the Old Testament.
I leave you with my favorite quote from Robert F Kennedy:
We must recognize the full human equality of all our people - before God, before the law, and in the councils of government. We must do this not because it is economically advantageous - although it is; not because the laws of God and man command it - although they do command it; not because people in other lands wish it so. We must do it for the single and fundamental reason that it is the right thing to do
