As many of us know from watching the streaming video of committee hearing, Senator Max Baucus has just announced he's voting against the public option (after saying a laundry list of really nice things about it) because he can't get 60 votes. Never mind that he doesn't need to get 60, and never mind that passing a bill without the public option will simply be a way to fritter away valuable time and funding. Never mind that giving up when you have the upper hand is a bizzare display of weakness to a dying party with a dying cause.
The logic of Senator Baucus through this whole process has been bewildering, unprofessional, and unfaithful to both his party and his constituents. He has a abundance of polling information showing him what the American people want in a healthcare bill- that is, the Democratic plan with a public option. So Baucus decides to work with the Republicans (or be duped by them) to make a non-Democratic plan without a public option, and when that fails he still won't admit that he has been wrong the whole time.
He wants legislation without teeth that nobody wants passed. On what planet does Max Baucus spend most of his time?
UPDATE: Initial vote is eight ayes, and fifteen nays. Way to stand with the American people, Baucus, Lincoln, Nelson and co.
