Celluloid Closet no more!
The Celluloid Closet was directed & written by Rob Epstein & Jeff Friedman. The film is based on the book by Vito Russo. Russo researched the history of how motion pictures portrayed GLBT characters. It was given limited release in '96, then shown on HBO. The documentary interviews men and women connected with Hollywood to comment on film clips and their own personal experiences with the treatment of LGBT characters in film. From the sissy characters, to the censorship of the Hollywood Production Code, the coded gay characters & cruel stereotypes to the progress made in the '90s. Russo wanted his book to be transformed into a documentary film and helped out on the project until he died in '90.
