From a Democratic Socialists of America e-mail:
Michael Moore's new documentary, Capitalism: A Love story, on the financial crisis opens nationwide this weekend. The film premiered in New York and Los Angeles on September 23 and has been screened at a number of special events including the AFL-CIO convention.
The film is virtually a commercial for DSA's politics. It is getting a tremendous buzz in the media and positive reviews. Chris Maisano will review the film for Democratic Left in the upcoming issue. I urge every member and friend of DSA to see the film.
Read on to find out why this film is so much in sync with what DSA has stood for all along.
The e-mail goes on to say:
Moore's films draw large audiences predisposed to our perspective. It is likely that the audience for the film screening will be larger than most progressive events in your community. As such the screenings of this film present a great opportunity to get DSA's message out to a larger audience and to recruit new members to our cause. We have modified two of our standard recruiting fliers so that they respond directly to the challenge made by Michael Moore to his audience at the end of the film.
Two fliers are available for this purpose:Featuring Huerta and Erenreich who say this:
Active organizing for democracy is needed now more than ever. For this to succeed, both working and poor people--who are the majority--have to have a voice. DSA is one of those voices.-Dolores Huerta
and this:
DSA carries on a fine old American tradition--the tradition carried on by Eugene Debs, Mother Jones, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and thousands more. I am proud to be a member.-Barbara Ehrenreich
The text of this flier is:
Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is
an activist organization, not a political party.
From fighting for single payer healthcare
or to restore our economy, from combating wars in
Iraq and Afghanistan and the domestic war on the
poor, to proposing democratic alternatives to the
power of the big banks and transnational corporations,
DSA is central to struggles to advance a progressive
America. This struggle is carried on not only
by prominent leaders, but more importantly, through
the work of DSA activists in communities and on
campuses.
America’s right-wing built powerful movements
around big ideas and fundamental values. Their leadership
is motivated and organized ideologically. We
progressives need to proclaim our big ideas and our
fundamentally democratic values. Democratic Socialists
believe "we the people" should control not
just government, but the powerful economic institutions
that so deeply affect our lives.
So, take the next step. Stand up with us for your
socialist values. Join with us in affirming a progressive
future for America. DSA works on immediate
issues, like peace, jobs, health care as we build a
long term movement for social and economic change.
To join DSA is to help build coalitions across singleissue
movements and educate the public about the
threat posed to democracy by unbridled corporate
capitalist power.
The growth of corporate power and neoliberal globalization
threaten the possibility of democracy both
at home and abroad. We are part of an international
movement fostering solidarity across borders. But
as residents of the most powerful capitalist nation,
we recognize that our greatest act of international
solidarity is to build a vibrant and diverse left in the
United. States. We invite you to join us in an effort
worthy of a lifetime of commitment.
DSA has been there when the Democratic Party needed us every time. We are now at a crucial moment in our Nation's history. We just elected a man we followed to bring us change. Many who support him want to believe that somehow capitalism will turn into something it is not. This film should end that myth. We need an alternative!
