Left: Frank Edwards
LAST WEEK, while rifling through the files of Project Blue Book -- the official Air Force investigation into the 'flying saucer' mystery -- I stumbled onto a little piece of history.
It was the transcript of a talk given by newsman Frank Edwards in Spring, 1956 (why it ended up in Project Blue Book's files is anybody's guess). Fascinated by what I read, I immediately wondered when I'd be able to work it seamlessly into what has generally been a chronological narrative study of the history of the phenomenon. The fact that it took place in 1956, and that it was a singular event, convinced me that there might never be an 'exactly right' time and in any case it could be years away in the course of this series. In the end, having always respected the forces of serendipity, I decided that if the fates were going to bring it my way now, then now was the right time to publish it.
And so, without further ado: Ladies and Gentlemen... Mr. Frank Edwards.
