With ALL the issues going on in the country, it is not wholly unexpected that Democrats are not fully focused on the governor’s race in Virginia where Mr Creigh Deeds(D)is running against Mr Bob McDonnell(R). We as Progressives must not forget that fighting for a Democrat, Mr Creigh Deeds, to win the governor’s race is especially important nationally on three levels at the very least.

First, if Mr. Deeds wins it will be very important in the re-districting that is scheduled for the congressional districts in a state that is trending Democratic blue (or purple at the very least).

Secondly, if Mr. Deeds wins, we would avoid the punditry narrative that Democrats are going to be loose very badly in 2010 that is beginning to take shape.

Third, Democratic legislators are cowardly at the threat of a loss. Once Dems in congress and senate think that their own re-election is threatened, then they are going to become even bigger cowards and refuse to enact the changes that need to be done to move this country forward.

Please join the fight and help out Mr Deeds in VA in any way you can. There is still a month to go and if any shake ups are going to happen, now is the time – Please help and thanks

I think that we are making a mistake if we give up the VA governor's race without a huge fight and here is my argument.

First, if Mr. Deeds wins the governor’s race this will be very important in the re-districting that is scheduled for the congressional districts in a state that is trending Democratic blue (or purple at the very least). Having a Democratic governor in place in VA would ensure that the opportunities to skew a make-up of voting districts in the favor of republicans are minimized or avoided. Democrats need all the congressional votes they can get in order to preserve any progressive policy gains we have made in the last few years.

Secondly, if Mr. Deeds wins the governor’s race, we would avoid the punditry narrative that Democrats are going to be loose very badly in 2010. We all know that this is how the Mainstream Media is pushing narrative for the political re-alignment so that they can have a repeat 1994.  We should be working our hardest to ensure that this does not happen because all our progressive agenda would be immediately curtailed.

Third, Democratic legislators are so jittery and cowardly that once they think that their own re-election is threatened, then they are going to become even bigger cowards and refuse to enact the changes that need to be done to move this country forward.

The latest I heard was that 9% points separate the two with the republican ahead. Can we at least do two things to put in a fight for Mr Creigh Deeds (i) do some opposition research and find out the political information that can shake up the race (ii) create some positive excitement for Deeds though creating buzz on line, financial donations, and creative material that can change the dynamics of the race.

I suspect that a number of people are not that bothered about a Virginia Governor's but I think that we are wrong if we think that it is not crucial.

I believe that what finally happens will depend on the role of the grassroots and their ability to be creative and bold.
Hence, I am using this as a challenge for us in the grassroots to re-engage and fight harder at every level and for every vote. Where has the fight for Democratic wins gone among activists? Are we ready to roll over and let the reoublicans get away with being on the offensive while we seem passive at best?

Have we really done ALL we can do to support Mr Deeds with our creativity and resources or are we in fact letting the other side win without a fight?

We can use the tools we have to make some connections among the republican candidate and some people or organizations that would make independents in Virginia take a second look.

Please people, progressives are very creative and we know how to do this so please BRING THE DEEDS BUZZ and see what we can do in the next few weeks.

Ps. I do not live in Virginia but those who live in VA or the neighbouring states, can you please try to get some video footage of the republican that can focus attention on his shortcomings.

what can you do for Mr Deeds?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  No. 3 is the most consequential, imo -- (4+ / 0-)

espcially for the freshmen class of the Blue Dogs who could see a Deeds lost in a purple state as a signal for retreat, and vote accordingly to protect their own hard-won seats from Republican incumbents.

Virginia! a lot is riding on you :)

  •  Deeds needs to go positive... (6+ / 0-)

He needs to say what he's going to do - which should basically be "I'm going to keep on doing what Warner and Kaine did".  Folks know about McDonnell's thesis now, it's time to tell folks more than "Did you hear about McDonnell's thesis..." and say "Here's my plan/vision for Virginia...".

  •  Will canvass this afternoon for Deeds (5+ / 0-)

    thanks for spotlighting this race

It is all about turnout-it's it always?-so if you don't live in VA, remind any friend who do, to vote for Deeds NOV. 3RD!

But so far, Deeds is running a miserable campaign.  If he loses, he'll lose because of a lack of effective campaigning, not because  McDonnell is a better choice.

    •  Isn't Deeds a Blue Dog? (0+ / 0-)

Maybe he doesn't want to win, because that would not bode well for the right?

Is he just putting up a token challenge?

I understand that the Republican is an even worse dog than Deeds, and that pragmatism demands getting what you can, subject to the real-politic.

But resolute grassroots organizing can turn a conservative constituency to the left, forcing their representative to move to the left, or else be primaried  and replaced with a more viable Progressive.

The real-politik can be changed.  Virtually overnight, even, sometimes...but especially with protracted grassroots struggle.

So...while I often take the position that we don't "need" any more Blue Dogs, and that we do not "need" a fascist opposition in the party, nor in Congress, to be a democratic natiion...I can nevertheless dig the concept that a little something something is, generally,  better than less than nothing, within the context of a nationwide surge of electoral mobilization for an unprecedented, historic interim election turnout, to seize the power.

As I understand it, Virginia swung Democratic, to Obama, last time, for the first time since LBJ.  This is not some insignificant fluke.

Public opinion has reached a critical mass.  The right is no longer politically correct in this country.  We are now at a tipping point, and every election from now on will be absolutely critical, as to which way it tips.

The right is counting on the usual low voter turnout for the interim election, to buy them time, to make sure Obama, the Democrats, and the left "fail".

The right has consistently turned out it's entire wing-nut constituency, these many years, to barely seize and hold power, by hook and by crook, mainly by suppression of likely Democratic voter turnout.  The right has no reserves to call up.  They are dead meat, politically.

Some 100 million eligibles did not vote last time, even for Obama, mainly due to the perception of "no difference" between the parties.  That huge latent pool of mostly progressive potential voters must be energized, to seize the power, to purge the right, democratically, electorally.

Deeds needs to emphasize that there is a difference, and not try to further blur the lines in that regard, for optimal success.

points you made in this diary.  Haven't heard a word.  All we can hope for is that McDonnell has a real Macaca Moment closer to the election.  I don't understand how women can be for McDonnell, unless they agree that we're detrimental to the family if we work to keep a roof over our children's heads, that we're too stupid to be entrusted with our own private medical decisions, etc., etc.

But some women are really, really stupid.  The late whatshername (can't think of it, but she wrote The Women's Room) called these women "caryatids."  They hold up the roof of the patriarchy in exchange for what they think is protection.

    •  Don't just write to the campaign (0+ / 0-)

write letters to the editor to your local newspaper

      canvass

      make phone calls

There are 30 days left-last year 30 days was an eternity

so now is the time to help

Deeds is not a fabulous campaigner but he DOES have what it takes to be a great
