This is a very short diary. Although I cannot participate in any discussion that might take place immediately after I post this (due to my work demands today), I felt that this story, which to my knowledge has not been covered here, needs to be shared with the DKos community. If you believe we live in a post-racial society, have a read below the jump.
I try to treat everyone equally.
Those words from the lips of Keith Bardwell, justice of the peace in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, from this October 15, 2009, msnbc story.
Mr. Bardwell made that remark when asked why--in his role as justice of the peace--he had denied an interracial couple a marriage license. Ahhhh, the irony.
Mr. Bardwell went on to explain that while he marries non-interracial couples (he even marries blacks!!!!!!!!!!!!), he does not marry interracial couples for two reasons.
- Interracial marriages don't last long; and,
- again from the msnbc story:
I don't do interracial marriages because I don't want to put children in a situation they didn't bring on themselves. In my heart, I feel the children will later suffer.
Oh sweet Jesus! There is so much to say, but I'm off to work and I will read y'alls comments during my lunch break.
Oh wait, one last heaping of irony for ya:
Bardwell told the Daily Star of Hammond that he was not a racist.
