We just got back from getting my 7 and 9 year old the H1N1 vaccine. I was convinced that I wanted only the dead vaccine but was told once we were there that my children were only eligible for the nasal mist as we thankfully have no underlying conditions at this point and the shot supply is limited. The doctor at the health clinic assured me that they would not be contagious as I have been reading that they could shed it from the live mist. I am concerned since we may be around a newborn soon and don't know if this is true.
Also, I asked about Tamiflu if they should come down with the flu prior to the vaccine kicking in and he said you could still take it - its just not as effective. Again, wondering if others have heard this.
Two more questions I am putting out there - since my kids are 9 and under, they will have to have a second shot in a month. Does that mean they won't have protection until after that shot? How long before there is protection typically after one shot? I appreciate the input from this community. Thanks!
