I'm a student at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) and recently I've started volunteering for Organizing for America with a friend of mine. At our campus we really don't have many political events and we've craved for a meaningful and organized one for so long. We decided that we should take matters into our own hands and we wanted to have an event right here on campus for health care reform. Our main goal was to get young people's attention which included both college and upper class high school students. We knew the best way to get them to come out would be through a basketball tournament. Well, today it all went downhill for us...
We spoke to the Sales and Marketing Organizational Leader and we found out that since we are not part of a student organization, they would be charging us $2,600 just to rent out two courts at our on-campus gym. Now we aren't being funded by OFA, so financially we were out of luck with that.
We brainstormed and it hit me! I figured why won't we hold an education forum at my old high school. That way we can still attract young people to come out. The problem we quickly figured out was that we don't know how to keep their attention. We thought that the three things that generally appeal to young men are video games, food, and sports. While for many young ladies in this area their attention tends to focus simply on boys. Now we were thinking of somehow tying that to our forum, yet exactly how would we do that?
That is where my fellow Kossacks come in and can help us out with. Does anybody have any ideas on what we can do to really inform these kids without sounding like the typical lecture? Any suggestions would greatly help!
**I just want to mention our purpose for doing this is to simply get involved. Like I mentioned earlier, our college campus doesn't hold many political events (the Young Republicans typically hold events, but that's obviously not for me lol) so this is our way of taking control and making a difference.**
