Ever wonder what 79 million dollars smashing into the Moon would look like? Well this Friday morning will be your chance to watch the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) slam into the recess of a lunar crater called Cabeus located near the south pole of the Moon. The event is scheduled around 07:30 EDT or 04:30 am PDT Check out this article which gives more indepth details and several links showing you the best opportunities to view the impacts. Check to see if your local observatory is planning a LCROSS party. I got invited to watch the LCROSS lunar crash at Fremont Peak Observatory out in California, unfortunately I do not have the money or time to fly out there this weekend. I am certainly jealous!
There has already been some announcements in the last few weeks about water existing on the surface of the Moon. The LCROSS impact will determine if there are perhaps a reservoir of ice hidden in the shadows of polar craters that are shielded from sunlight year around. Water could be an important source of fuel if humans decided to return to the Moon and establish a lunar outpost. Here is a great animated video about showing the mechanics of the LCROSS crash.
NASA has its own LCROSS website which provides information on watch parties and time to impact.
Note: Be warned you will need access to a fairly powerful telescope. The smaller telescope will have difficulty getting a good resolution of the impact site.
