If you haven't heard, Conservapedia wants to create a Bible stripped of "liberal bias". See here, here, and here. Seems the far right stopped beating people to death with the book long enough to read what was inside, and was shocked to find it stuffed with social justice, humility, and shameless peacemongering. Solution? A Fox News Bible, cleansed of "liberal bias"...
My answer: Rewrite the Bible myself, injecting my own philosophy. I'd actually already done two passages long before Conpedia got the idea: Psalm 23 and Matthew 6:9-13. In light of the developments from the right, I decided, as a long-term project, I'll rewrite the whole thing.
The point is not to liberalize the Bible. As anyone who's read it knows, there's no need: it's already pretty leftist, at least the New Testament. (Bible Trivia of the Day: when Jesus died on the cross to cleanse our sins, he rendered the Old Testament laws obsolete, leaving the Old Testament a collection of history and poetry, its laws no longer binding Christians) The point is rather to fire a salvo in the culture wars, shedding light on the non-sacred nature of the Bible, which was written by men in the first place and continues to be rewritten by men today. In short, drown out whatever noise Conservapedia makes with some noise of my own. For this reason, I'm not reengineering the Bible visibly as satire: that would be too easy to write off. I'm writing it very seriously (though that doesn't rule out having fun in the process) so that it will fall under Poe's Law. In my edition, the Bible will be thoroughly soaked in New Age philsophy and ideas... maybe if the fundamentalists look closely enough at it, besides their violent rage, they'll learn something and maybe even elevate their consciousness a little bit.
Besides having already rewritten the two linked passages above, I started today with the first chapter of the first book: A Modern Version of Genesis Chapter 1.
