Over the past few weeks we've gotten several questions about our stance on gay marriage and gay rights. In response to these questions and the passage of the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act, we sent out the follow press release earlier today.
Congressional Candidate Ascot Comments on Civil Rights Bills
Chicago, IL | November 3, 2009
Jim Ascot, a leading candidate for U.S. Congress in Illinois's 7th District, publicly commented today on pending federal civil rights legislation strengthening and supporting his progressive stance on social issues.
"I believe the 7th District and the nation undoubtedly will benefit from the protection of civil rights for all individuals, including those in the LGBT community. I believe that the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act and the Employment Non-Discrimination Act of 2009 are worthy first steps in ensuring equality under the law. But we must go further in guaranteeing civil rights by ending the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy and repealing the Defense of Marriage Act," Ascot said earlier today.
