Today I watched first episode of the new "V" television show, via the internet. It's a remake of a series that's already had many incarnations, beginning in the late 1980s.
This one went along the same lines; extraterrestrial visitors come bearing gifts and ulterior motives. They already have sleeper cells in place to make those ulterior motives more likely to occur.
In the first episode, one of the characters, a compromised reporter, is very careful to clarify that what the Visitors are offering is Universal Healthcare.
When I watched that, and realized that millions of people were watching that show last week, my heart sank a little. Yes, there are sleeper cells out there, even in "liberal" Hollywood (snicker), undermining the concept of universal healthcare.
After all, it's provided by Others, aliens, who have ulterior motives. Stuff like this is very potent in the psyche.
Update: The segment I'm referring to occurs a bit after the 36 minute mark of this video: 'V' pilot on Hulu.
Also, I see that the NYT noticed it too, referring to "...a jarring reference to 'universal health care.'" in this article NYT Review.
