I don't want my daughter or granddaught fighting the same fight my mother and grandmother fought. I'm afraid we keep moving in the direction we are currently headed and that is where we will wind up.
During the campaign there was a clear difference between Obama and McCain when it came to where each camp stood on the question of choice. That led me to create the following 30 second spot and associated graphic image.
The election was held.
McCain lost.
Elections have consequences.
Obama got to appoint Justice Sotomayor.
We all sat back and breathed a sigh of relief having dodged that bullet -- for now.
Then along comes Stupak and Pitt with their boneheaded enablers. What they have effectively done is moved the Overton Window so now the old McCain graphic can be recast as follows:
That is a hop, skip, and a jump to this:
Brilliant.
This is what we fought for? I don't think so.
This is the kind of boneheaded play that reinforces my rejection of the idea that we should do whatever it takes to get more Democrats. That is not good enough. I haven't bought that bait since Harold Ford voted for the Paris Hilton Tax Cut. He stole a little more than a thousand bucks out of each of our pockets when he did that. After that, I went with progressive Democrats only. Some argued that was myopic. However, I think the current handling of health care reinforces the validity of my position.
Now I am going a step further. I am prioritizing my donations. First in in line, I am supporting Lois Herr to replace Pitt in congress. It's not just about putting a woman in place of a man. It's about putting pro-choice women ahead of any males, incumbent or challenger. Why? Because I think Chris Rock pretty much nailed it when he said
Men are only as faithful as their options.
You think that is a crass overgeneralization? Consider Stupak, Pitt and the appeasers in the Democratic Party as exhibit A and tell me where Rock is wrong.
Now let me tell you why Lois Herr is a particularly good choice and model for the types of Democratic candidates who I am going to be donating money toin this next election cycle and for as many more as it takes to shift things to the left. She literally wrote the book, "Women, Power and AT&T: Winning Rights in the Workplace".
In short, she was there. She's got the scars to prove it. She knows what it means to go back. I am confident that will not happen on her watch. Women like her have the moxie and the tenacity to get to where they are in spite of serious obstacles. I don't think women like that will be intimidated by a bunch of old guys threatening to stand in their way by talking something to death.
Everyone else can move to the back of the line. If there's any money left over, we can talk.
UPDATE Not even 20 minutes had to elapse before I snagged my first comment showing exactly what we have to deal with. h/t ouwant2 for demonstrating with his comment precisely what the problem is. His comment was so offensive, several people have hr'd it. I understand why they are doing that, but I am going to exercise my prerogative and decide the content in this posting.
Here's the comment:
piss off (2+ / 4-)
men are only as faithful as there options?? Find better guys to open your legs for, and you might change your mind.
I really cant believe your sexist BS attitude towards me, when you don't even know me. You don't know I raised 5 daughters after their mother died, but you are going to throw out some mind numbing BS sexist philosophy because your want your abortions to be paid for by other people?????
I hope you find what you are looking for.
Ironically, I did find what I was looking for... proof positive of the backwards thinking we have to deal with in our own ranks. Take that argument and apply it to hypertension, cholesterol, diabetes, asthma, emphysema, or a host of other chronic conditions related to lifestyles and you are right in bed with the teabaggers (listen to the audience comment at 2:09).
