Earlier today, one of the most widely read diarists on this site made two claims to which I took great exception. I commented briefly on one of the statements at the time, but felt that the claims were so egregious that they should be brought to the attention of the community and, hopefully, explained satisfactorily or withdrawn by the diarist herself.

I wonder if Planned Parenthood has a fund we can (8+ / 0-)

contribute to as a protest against the Stupak amendment. IIRC, people protested Palin's position by donating and having her sent a note of thanks for helping their fundraising. We need something similar to register our feelings about those voted for this amendment.
There's going to be an even greater need for their services if this passes.
Any ideas? Has anyone called PP about this?

the contribute link. You can do a "in name of..."
I really wouldn't donate to PP and NARAL at this point since they were out to lunch on this amendment.
I work full-time with the FDL team on health reform thanks to your donations.

At some point this weekend followed a link (from someone I trust on the issue) to the National Network of Abortion Funds. They look good to me...

I do not follow NARAL but I do follow Planned Parenthood. They have NOT been "out to lunch" on this and I challenge you to back up your spurious and vague assessment with facts. Just becasue we did not get the outcome that we wanted does not mean that they did not fight tooth and nail along the way. After all, FDL did not get the result that it wanted and you certainly fought for your agenda every step of the way.
Thanks!

any of the pro-choice organizations were on top of this, we here should have known ahead of time. Something doesn't compute, unless they were trying to keep their work a secret.

I can only speak about Planned Parenthood since I am a supporter and receive regular communications from them. I can assure you that they were, in no way, trying to keep their work secret. In fact, they activley promote their work, and have been fundraising for their PAC around this issue for months.
If you were blindsinded, it could be that you were not following the efforts of the reproductive rights organizations. Additionally, the folks with the biggest megaphones here (e.g. FDL, PCCC) never chose to highlight the issue, if they were even aware of it or following it themselves. And finally, neither NARAL nor Planned Parenthood has any responsibility to blog on Daily Kos, and if memory serves, neither has ever chosen to do so.
There is no conspiracy here, I can assure you.
Thanks!

blogs very rarely.
You are 100% that a lot of the health care reform activity is not promoted by the loudest voices in the netroots.

Planned Parenthood Action Fund is the political arm of PP. Donation link in top right hand corner.

Planned Parenthood does good work (in other words, money is more likely to be spent wisely than say at NARAL), were helpful to pro-choice Democrats up and down the ballot in 2008 and have been active in fighting for health care reform.
Ad last year that got free media attention: http://www.youtube.com/...
I'd advise against donating to NARAL, which IMHO, isn't the most effective advocate for the pro-choice position.
Diclaimer: I have never been employed by either PP or NARAL.

I know that it's a little hard to follow because the entire thread is flush left. I apologize for that and will sum up the thread this way:
I am a firm believer in seeking first to understand and then to be understood, so I am simply asking these two questions and hoping for a response. I would be more than happy to enter into a cordial dialogue with slinkerwink once she has responded.
Thank you.
