Somebody pinch me. Am I really seeing this from the American Medical Association?
After 72 years of denial, finally we are seeing some common sense on medical marijuana. I don't think the endorsement goes far enough, but it's a great start. The AMA's recommendation to approve grant monies for further research, and to provide for other funding opens the door. University research programs in all states might tap into this funding and in the process garner further support from other organizations and the public.
They also recommend a review to reschedule MJ form Schedule I! !!
Will this reversal by the AMA have any impact?

Living in blood red Georgia, I can honestly say when this topic is brought up on the local newpaper's blogsite, perhaps 80% are for outright legalization, and there a lot of them posting. Red state mind you!
I also see the potential tax benifits of legalization - how could anyone not? The AMA has provided credibility and permission...permission and justification to the our government.
Most of us on dailykos have seen the prison statistics. That's another blog.
Will this reversal by the AMA have any impact in propelling a progressive approach to research, and will this validation change conservative minds? Push the AMA decision out to your communites. The more we put this in the public eye, the more progress we will make.
Sorry for the short diary. I smell garlic bread in the oven - gotta go. The story had to be here. It's much bigger than me.

UPDATE: Thanks for the Rec list! As suggested by many of you, I'm adding the links to the AMA's Executive Summary, their Recommendations, and to the American College of Physicians (ACP) Report - not to be confused with the AMA Report which has been submitted for peer review and is currently not avalailable publically. Although DoGoodLawyer's comment below does provide a path to the report itself. We now have both the AMA and the ACP supporting reform.
Sorry for the confusion on "MJ" - I updated the title.
