Do you remember how much scorn was heaped at Democrats who suggested that maybe, just maybe, staying in Iraq for a McCain for an eternity was a really bad idea? That how a timeline for withdrawal would be to embolden the terrorists?
Well, the man who was supposed to ride to the Republicans' rescue in 2008, a keynote speaker for John McCain at last year's Republican National Convention, has just joined Bill Frist in the proud Republican tradition of appeasing the Taliban.
Fred Thompson says of Afghanistan what many in the media have said about the public option: that that defeat is a foregone conclusion.
"It really doesn't matter how President Obama divides the Afghan baby, how he splits the difference between McChrystal and Biden. Because the war has been lost," Thompson said on his radio show today.
You see? Fred Thompson wants us to withdraw from Afghanistan. Even that Neocon recognizes that the Graveyard of Empires is no place to bet ours.
Will this be the beginning of a left-right alliance to demand withdrawal from Afghanistan? Is the right rediscovering the merits of isolationism as applied to military force?

And, yes, I know that he's saying that the fight is lost because no one outside of McChrystal land has religious faith in the prospect of 'victory' in the worst place on earth.
