I received an email from a Christian friend of min this morning, asking that I (and everyone that this was forwarded to) send a Xmas card to the ACLU.
The idea being that the time and money that the ACLU burned through looking for donations in the cards would be a victory for "Christians".
Here's a portion of the email-
Pass this on to your church, co-workers, family, and friends. What do you have to lose but 44 cents, what do you have to gain ----------- more than you will ever know.
What a clever idea!
Yes, Christmas cards. This is coming early so that you can get ready to include an important address to your list.
Want to have some fun this CHRISTMAS? Send the ACLU a CHRISTMAS CARD this year.
As they are working so very hard to get rid of the CHRISTMAS part of this holiday, we should all send them a nice,
CHRISTIAN card to brighten up their dark, sad, little world....Here's the address, just don't be rude or crude. (It's not the
Christian way, you know.)
ACLU
125 Broad Street
18th Floor
New York , NY 10004
Two tons of Christmas cards would freeze their operations because they wouldn't know if any were regular mail containing contributions.
What a Xian thing to do. I immediately fired back my response (and cc'ed everyone in the from field)-
I happen to be a proud card-carrying member of the American Civil Liberties Union. After the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the fear and hysteria in the press and in congress, the "P.A.T.R.I.O.T. act was passed.
This bill is a regressive attack on our rights to live free without government interference. It allows for the circumvention of the Bill of Rights and should have been opposed by any true patriot. As I read about this bill, I searched on-line (Teh Google) and the ONLY organization that was fighting against this travesty of our rights was the ACLU.
A lot of people don't like the ACLU because they stand up for EVERYONE'S rights. A lot of good christian people in this country hate the ACLU because they don't think that atheists, or Muslims, or gays should have rights. Those people aren't "true Americans" to them.
I believe in America. I think that diversity made America strong, and I believe that the ACLU is protecting OUR rights, not "THEIR" rights.
If you feel the same way about America, then send the ACLU a check in that Christmas card.
If you can spare $20.00 for a good cause, send it to Feeding America.
But if you can spare a little more, show the ACLU some love.
