Not that I wish to drive traffic to their site, but there is a MASSIVE banner ad at the top of DailyKos as follows:
I went to search for the term "terror gap" because it stinks of rightwing bullshit.
Close the Terror Gap is an 'activist site'. If fearmongering and twisted information is 'activism', then yeah, they are activists.
Under current federal law, suspected terrorists can legally purchase firearms. Congress must act to end this flawed and dangerous policy.
The recent shooting at Fort Hood is the latest tragic example of what’s at stake. The alleged shooter, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, had been under investigation for his potential ties to terrorists – but Hasan passed a federal background check when he later bought a gun. What’s more, FBI counterterrorism officials were not notified when Hasan purchased that gun.
Hasan was not the only terror suspect to buy guns from licensed dealers. The Government Accountability Office reports that over the past five years, people on the terrorist watch list bought guns or explosives 865 times.
For the Godzillionth time, I am aware Daily Kos/Kos MEdia have no control over what advertisers throw up there.
It still stinks.
Well, I say "wingnut" a bit hastily: the Brady Center is all for this as well.
POSITION: As a way to strengthen the Brady background check system, the Brady Campaign supports the Terror Gap bill.
PROBLEM: There is a gaping hole in our nation’s firearm laws that terrorists can exploit. Federal authorities can't stop sales of guns – including military-style assault weapons – by federally licensed gun dealers to known or suspected terrorists because of gaps in current law. Our definitions of those prohibited from purchasing guns from federally licensed dealers do no include those known as suspected terrorists.
THREAT: There is government-documented evidence that terrorists have armed themselves with guns purchased in the U.S.
It's significantly less fear-mongering and they appear to be for it consistent with their gun control objectives.
I don't support a whole lot of effort being placed in "gun control'. In America is just too late, it's part of the culture. I do support proper and stringent background checks. I have to get a full background check every time I apply for a job, I don't have any qualms about the same level of scrutiny for somebody purchasing a handgun, as this is predominantly what "gun control" means: dealing with concealable firearms.
But the wingnut site with their banner splashed all over the front page just stops short of saying Hasan's rampage was "terrorism", which is already classic wingnuttia.
It shows me who's got the money for what.
