The Republican Party has set its sights on retaking control of Congress in 2010 and the White House in 2012. Yet, we are barely beginning to recover from the last Republican administration. They put our economy and national debt into a deep hole, but couldn’t wait to harass the new President for not digging us out soon enough. The President has had no choice but to increase the national debt or suffer a total financial collapse -- a Hoover-style great depression. Republicans constantly harp on deficit spending, but conveniently ignore their responsibility for it.
The earlier failed Republican administration paid little attention to our highest domestic priorities, so the new President has had to play catch up. In response to his initiatives, Republicans have become malcontents, constantly misrepresenting the President’s intentions and inviting rebellious behavior from the public. Absent have been any good ideas or sound alternatives to help get our country back on track. Republican leadership will not be satisfied until the President fails, regardless of how it affects our country.
Desperate to regain power, Republicans have resurrected the McCarthyism era, smearing the President with terms like Communist and Nazi. Their "vile extremist rhetoric" has demonstrated little respect for the democratic process and our institutions. The final words to Senator McCarthy were "Sir, have you no decency." He left Congress a broken man with a ruined reputation. A number of Republican leaders await a similar fate and they won’t be missed. Half of all Republicans recently surveyed could not pick a leader to head their party.
Republican leaders today have a serious attitude problem. Rather than rebuilding their Party based on solid accomplishments, they focus on defeating anything the President tries to do. They want to regain power the easy way by obstructing rather than the hard way by demonstrating leadership and good works. Republicans really want things to get worse for the American people so things will get better for them. When a Minority Party acts irresponsibly, it follows that they will be irresponsible when in the Majority.
