Dave's column today says that things aren't all that bad. This is still the greatest country in the world, by gum, and all it will take to reassert our greatness is…more government spending???
Seriously. Dave is for more spending on education (though he cleverly disguises it as "encouraging" charter schools, "improving" teacher quality, "supporting" community colleges, and, best of all, "simplifying" finances for students.)
He also wants the Feds to spend more on basic research (though, God forbid, they shouldn't try to direct that research at all with any sort of industrial policy). Also, rebuild our infrastructure (and he doesn't even mention "public-private partnerships" or letting, say, Halliburton own toll bridges).
Oh, and we need to reduce the deficit and cut corporate taxes, too.
Warning: sardonic meta-commentary overleaf…
So let's see: lots more government spending, plus tax cuts and "fiscal responsibility." It's the Trifecta, and it can be ours!

What a dunderhead. His solution to the deficit is—surprise!—a bipartisan commission. Just imagine how many teabaggers will ever sign on for the tax increases that anyone who is not in complete denial of reality knows are going to be necessary. I can hear Kumbaya playing in the background already.
And this tripe passes as sober conservative commentary. Oy.
