"The House passed legislation Friday aimed at preventing the next big financial crisis, ushering in the most sweeping set of changes to the banking regulatory system since the New Deal.
The bill, which passed 223-202, imposes more oversight and stronger capital cushions for the largest banks and Wall Street firms. It forces them to pay a total of as much as $150 billion into an emergency fund that could be tapped when a troubled company needs to be taken over and broken up."
This is a momentous occasion. Barney Frank's bill to prevent a 2009 crash from happening again, and straighten the banks out is voted on by the House.
CNN says "the most sweeping set of changes to the banking regulatory system since the New Deal."
The BBC agrees. http://news.bbc.co.uk/...
You would think that all the Democrats would be behind this, and they are. Rep Lee from Oakland, Rep Grijalva, Rep Grayson all for it, except for 27 Demos, Blue Dogs and Kucinich and Massa.
WTF???
First the Health Care Reform bill, now the Bank Reform bill,
Why are these so called progressives voting against the most two most progressive bills to come up in the last 20 years???
Someone needs to call them on the carpet and explain to them that the way to make the country more progressive is to actually make progress. When are they actually going to help pass something instead of sitting on their hands because it's not good enough for their refined sensibilities?
With Reps like Kucinich and Massa, who needs Republicans?
Update:To those who gave me the link to Kucinich's site. Thanks, but I already had it. The question was more rhetorical. Anyone can say, 'well this doesn't go far enough' but you don't get a multiple choice at the last vote, you get Yes or NO.
And for the people both on this issue and health care, who honestly say that we should trash the current bill and start over, please give me an example of a major policy objective that was voted down in the last vote and then resubmitted and passed again during the same Administration.
