I've heard it repeated enough times around here, and I want an answer from the community.
Whenever we talk about having our values and ideals frittered away, about having closely held beliefs trashed, violated, and how we won't vote for someone who works against our interests, we get "Well you want President Palin/the Republicans are worse/you must like the teabaggers etc..."
My question is this: Is this the sum of our American ideals? To only have a choice between bad and worse, forever? What the hell is the point then? We'll just drift towards the shit end of the spectrum, perhaps slower at times, but inexorable just the same.
It's a pathetic, wimpy attitude. Passive, and without conviction. Practically begging to be taken advantage of. Which is what has happened.
I renounce such an attitude. "Those who would give away freedom for a little safety and security deserve neither." I have the freedom to choose, and not just between those who betray my ideals, and those who betray my ideals more. I reject this "anything is permissible" attitude with the sole justification being that Republicans are worse.
Just something else I thought of...how does setting the bar at "Not Republican" help us craft better legislation for the country? When did our standards get that low?
