My friend Otter wrote these lyrics (sung to the tune of Silent Night, of course). I thought I'd share them today. I'm Jewish and don't know the story of Jesus all that well, but from what I've heard, it strikes me that if he did in fact exist, he would have been all for equal rights for the LGBT community. I'll let Otter's words speak for themselves:
A Not-So-Silent Night
Silent night, holy night
Hijacked by the religious right.
Hypocrites and homophobes
Camouflaged in choir robes.
Treating gay people like dirt,
Claim to be doing God’s work
Married life is only for straights
Children of lesbians do not rate
Legal protection for both of their moms
So say the zealots while chanting their psalms
Family values a joke
The right wing is morally broke
Dobson, Rick Warren and Palin are some
Of the fanatics doing us harm.
Fostering hatred, derision and worse,
Turning religion from blessing to curse
We are paying the price
Time to stop being so nice!
On winter solstice we stand in the light
Sustained by our passion to win equal rights
Keep marching onward and never retreat
'Til lies and bigotry suffer defeat
Silent we never can be
'Til we are equal and free!
