I did a cursory search to see if anyone had mentioned Ethan Hawke's profile of Kris Kristofferson back in April. Couldn't find mention, so I thought I'd drop this in on a slow day. I just found it on Ben Prisk's blog.
The piece, entitled The Last Outlaw Poet, begins with an account of a confrontation at Willie Nelson's birthday celebration at the Beacon Theater between Kristofferson and an unnamed country personality. (Didn't really need naming, as a the description of the star's biggest hit "about bombing America's enemies back into the Stone Age," gives the reader a good idea.)
The young "boot in your ass" chickenhawk casually said to Kristofferson, "None of that lefty shit out there tonight, Kris."
Button, meet push.
Willie made a half-hearted attempt to defuse the moment, but obviously was enjoying it too much to try very hard.
I cannot reproduce Kristofferson's scathing roast of young Mr. Rhymes-With-Teeth without violating fair use, and no attempt at summary could possibly do it justice.
So, just to make it easy, I'll post the link again. Leads to the first page of the profile, wherein is found the contretemps. For those of you who can't stand blustering, faux-patriotic chickenhawks and would love to hear one sliced, diced and julienned by a former Ranger and real American hero,
Merry Christmas.
