Israeli Supreme Court again affirms that Palestinians have no rights that the Israeli military is bound to respect.
I wrote about Berlanty Azzam last month. She has been attending Bethlehem University. She was at a checkpoint and the Israeli-occupation military forces checked her ID. It seems that she is from Gaza, and Israel has decided that she had not the right to freedom of movement, or freedom to education. With just two months left to complete her business degree, she was kidnapped by the military (blindfolded for part of the time)... and taken immediately to Gaza, with no court hearing.
In other words, No rights that the Israeli authorities were bound to respect.
There is nothing unusual here, as i said before. It is not the excesses of the Netanyahu regime. This is routine. this is ordinary.
that is precisely the problem.
Azzam petitioned against her expulsion with the assistance of Gisha, a legal center for freedom of movement, but the High Court accepted the Israeli authorities' decision to deny Azzam a chance to remain in the West Bank to continue her education.
The authorities did not claim security charges against Azzam.
Regarding the assertion that she is an illegal alien in the West Bank, Gisha said that she had moved to the region legally with an entrance permit into Israel issued to her by the IDF commander on the scene after a meticulous security check. Haaretz
"Illegal Alien"? In her own country? Have they lost their minds?
According to the Oslo accord, the Palestinian Authority has the power to change its' citizen's addresses in their identity cards, and is only required to notify the Israel authorities.
But ever since the accord was implemented, Israel has refused to accept the PA's authority to register change of address from Gaza to the West Bank, and has retained a monopoly over the acceptance or denial of an address change request.
The Oslo Accords were for the benefit of Israel. So naturally, Israel gets to choose what parts it wishes to implement, and what parts it wishes to ignore.
Yet another reason to say this:
we will have no peace in the Middle East until we create a mass movement for freedom and justice for the Palestinian people, calling for human rights and justice for everyone.
It will not come from political deals hatched by those who are doing their utmost to deny the Palestinians their very basic rights, every day, every hour of their lives.
It will only come from below as the people demand it. Join the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation.
PS as i was writing this, there are news reports of local University Students rebelling because their university budgets are getting cut. Why? Partly because the US is funding War and Occupation in the Middle East- In Iraq, In Afghnistan, In Palestine. So thousands of California students will be like Berlanty, unable to complete their education.
It's time to end this insanity.
