Mmm...I've been wondering about the constant raving about a return to base values; the "Family Values" party appears to think that returning to the Christian conservative roots is the way to go, but they (and their primary pundits) appear to be a tad confused. Looking at texts that one might expect them to use for guidance, I can see where some of this confusion might come from:
Proverbs 6:16-19 (New International Version)
16 There are six things the LORD hates,
seven that are detestable to him:
17 haughty eyes,
a lying tongue,
hands that shed innocent blood,
18 a heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet that are quick to rush into evil,
19 a false witness who pours out lies
and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.
Seems like we need a LOLcat picture here depicting Christianity and conservatism -- Ur Doing It Wrong.
Let's break this down for the "conservatives" and Rush-rabble:
Hint: Each line is a link to a different example.
17 haughty eyes,
a lying tongue,
hands that shed innocent blood,
Rush Limbaugh's "haughty eyes" are nothing compared to Karl Rove's lying tongue, and the death tolls mean nothing in the wars they agitate for and support as long as they can get what they want. Human life and the morals and ethics of civilized existence mean nothing to them; they honor nothing save themselves and the veil of mists they exude to disguise their true nature and form from the weak of mind and myopically focused. Their base is the base of the "too tired to care" and the "too selfish to notice" mixed with the "I've got mine, go get your own" brand of faux "Christianity."
18 a heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet that are quick to rush into evil,
They'll do whatever it takes to get their way, whether it's goad a nation into attacking or simply lying about why a nation needs to be attacked in order to get the war that they want.
19 a false witness who pours out lies
and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.
Limbaugh's constant on-air self-righteous airs smoothly blend lies together to fabricate a false reality, while the likes of Sean Hannity help stir the pot and attempt to elicit reaction, foment violence and incite insurrection when they can't get their way through just and legal means.
And for my final trick,
23 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. 24 Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!
25 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence.[a] 26 Blind Pharisee, first cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also.
-- Matthew 23:23-26 (New King James Version)
Yeah, I know -- they're quick to quote, but they don't actually know anything about the text they thump with such fervor and glee. It's going to pass right over their heads.
Hat-tip Becca.
