Thanks to droogie's excellent diary, we have a new project here on Daily Kos.
We shared stories about being poor, and it was common for people to talk about stretching a dollar so a family can eat and eat healthily. Since all of us have memories from tougher times, even if we're not currently poor, we can all contribute to this project.
I suggested a cookbook after people started pasting recipes in Droogie's diary.
Follow me over the fold for what we as Kossacks can do to help those who are newly poor, or are struggling to feed their children on food stamps, food shelves, or just on a low income.
Think of this as a permanent diary, so if you're interested, please bookmark it.
I'd like to put a cookbook together, but not an ordinary one. It should come with instructions on how to buy things like flour, beans, rice, and the like in bulk. It should have recipes that include items you might get from a food shelf. It should have instruction on how to keep your kids from getting obese from eating unhealthy food. It might even have suggestions on how to have a good time without spending any money, or much money.
I'll take your ideas from here and we'll create a PDF for distribution to food shelves and welfare offices.
Rather than buy a bunch of food to distribute, there is a free way to help, and all you have to do is supply your ideas for the following:
Recipes
Shopping
Nutrition
Economics
Entertainment
Clothing
Transportation
Add you own section - all are welcome! Please, though, with your contribution, annotate a category so its easier to collate.
Update I: There are a lot of good ideas already. If you have an idea to contribute, post it with a title that is a category, even if it's not mentioned here. That way, I can separate the comments form the ideas. Thanks.
There may be some cost to distributing once this is put together. If there is much interest, I'll see if I can get a paypal account started.
