Having grown up in Canada and having lived in the US for 18+ years I think I have a reasonable perspective toward both cultures. The primary difference between the two is multiculturalism (Canada) vs melting pot (US).
This week, there was a strange yet telling encounter between the two cultures media wise.
Billy Bob Tornton was starting a Canadian tour with his new band "The Box Masters", they combine the sounds of the British Invasion with Hillbilly sensibility. Here's the controversial interview:
more on the flip
In my opinion, Billy Bob was an asshole. Kind of Armandoish. He decided that since the interviewer had mentioned that he had done some film stuff earlier in his career, that interviewer had violated the terms of his recognizing their humanity.
IMO, he was being a bully because he thought he was Mr. Important. A typical attitude that pisses off lots of regular folk and pisses off Canadians when Americans brush us off as if we were Alaskans or something. However he then extended this attitude to insulting Canadian music fans and even insulted our food.
He then cancelled his Canadian tour.
What a fucking jerk!
I'm gonna boycott this asshole from now on.
fyi, Jian Ghomeshi is the host of the culture/music program Q broadcast by CBC Radio. He was a member of the 90's band Moxy Fruvoux
If you listen to Jian, he is very knowledgeable about the Music scene and art/culture in general. He is rarely rude, but he looks for more than is on the surface. IMNSHO he is one of the best Music journalists.
This got my goat.
