After seeing today's press conference, you have to wonder if his handlers will allow him to actually debate whoever wins the Democratic Primary. Bush's "there's a time for politics" theme does not really give a great degree of confidence about debates.
Besides, debates offer a chance to undue the value of their advertising war chest.
There are three debates currently scheduled, but as we all know, things change. If the Republicans were to bow out of a debate, what would be their justification?
I tend to think it'll be along the lines of:
At this critical time, the American People need me to lead as their President, and not as a Presidential Candidate. They know my record, and who I am. I've said what I will do. A debate won't change that. I believe the American People will understand why I must pass on the debate, and can make up their minds accordingly.
Any other ideas on themes that Bush might use to avoid the debates?
