Good evening from the Nation's Capital and welcome to tonight's edition of the The Daily Show/Colbert Report chat thread. Our regular host, TiaRachel needed the night off.
Everyone is welcome to jump in and join us. Turn on the tee vee and tune into to Comedy Central...Or don't. There's always plenty of discussions that have absolutely nothing to do with the shows. Tonight's guests are Nancy Pelosi on the Daily Show (she was also on Countdown this evening) and Phil Bronstein on the Colbert Report.
You need a biography of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (CA-08)? Okay. This is from her House website.
Since 1987, Nancy Pelosi has represented California's Eighth District in the House of Representatives. The Eighth District includes most of the City of San Francisco including Golden Gate Park, Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown, and many of the diverse neighborhoods that make San Francisco a vibrant and prosperous community.Overwhelmingly elected by her colleagues in the fall of 2002 as Democratic Leader of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi is the first woman in American history to lead a major party in the U.S. Congress. Before being elected Leader, she served as House Democratic Whip for one year and was responsible for the party's legislative strategy in the House. On January 4, 2007, Nancy Pelosi was elected Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.
Continuing with the San Francisco theme, Phil Bronstein will be on the Colbert Report. Bronstein is editor at large of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Here's his bio from his own blog:
Phil Bronstein began his career in San Francisco as a reporter and editor at the Jewish Bulletin, then moved on to reporting duties with KQED-TV and the San Francisco Examiner. Specializing in investigative projects and foreign correspondence, he was a 1986 Pulitzer Prize finalist for his work in the Philippines, and went on to cover conflicts in other parts of Southeast Asia, El Salvador, Peru and the Middle East.
He was named executive editor of the Examiner in 1991, having previously served as managing editor for news. When the Examiner and the San Francisco Chronicle merged in November, 2000, he was named senior vice president and executive editor of the paper, and became executive vice president and editor of the Chronicle in March 2003. In February, 2008, Phil was named executive vice president and Editor at Large of the Chronicle
He's scheduled to talk about the dying newspaper industry. Bronstein announced his appearance tonight. This paragraph made me laugh:
A lot of people I know watch "The Colbert Report" and are big fans. But none of them I talked to could even begin to figure out why I would actually want to go on the show. It's one thing to watch a public flogging but another to tie yourself to the posts in the square and wait for the lash.
I'm not sure which will be worse for him this evening: being from San Francisco or being a newspaper editor.
Anyway, I came up with a poll. Enjoy.
