My son related that he experienced a rather disturbing incident this morning. After he finished his story, he asked what he should do if this happens in the future. I had no idea. Can you help?
My son L----- is a charming young man, 19, home from his freshman year at college. We live in a major midwestern city.
This morning, while everybody else was still blissfully asleep, he arose, took our car, and ran over to a local fast food restaurant for an egg thingy. On the way back, a police cruiser followed him quite closely, riding the bumper even. I'm pleased to say that my son kept his cool, driving at or slightly below the speed limit, until he got to our neighborhood. He signaled for the turn in time, entered the subdivision at an appropriate speed, and then pulled into the driveway. Apparently, the officer was right on his tail until my son left the street, then gunned it and sped off.
I have no idea what to make of this. It could be that the officer was just looking for something to do on a boring Sunday morning, attempting to spook a young driver into committing a traffic violation. Or else this is another one of those "Driving while X" incidents I hear about (sometimes from my friends).
My son is a handsome brown man who joined our family by adoption when he was a baby. Except for a few racial epithets thrown at him by opponents on a soccer field, he's not yet experienced much trouble. He's also not seen the particular dark side of American law enforcement known as racial profilng. I did not mention that I was also frightened that, if pulled over, my son would experience the use of a perfectly harmless control device.
Any advice would be appreciated. At least we don't live in Phoenix!
