I've run into Cheryl Sullenger before. She's not a very nice person to say the least. More below...
The place was out front of Family Planning Associates which in 1987 was located in a medical building off campus but on property owned by San Diego State University. There was also a dentist in the building, which will enter the story later.
There was a clinic in San Diego near Balboa Park (Womancare Clinic) that had a pretty organized network of folks who helped prevent the building from being overrun by local Zealots for Zygotes on Saturday mornings. I had helped out there many times, but became aware that the other clinic had no one to help patients get into the building. So, I organized some friends to assist out by San Diego State. One friend arrived very early and parked his van in the parking lot so as to have a good view of the area. He set up a video camera and recorded everything that happened in that parking lot from the time we escorts arrived to the time we left. These tapes were later turned over to Federal authorities when it became known to us that several of the protestors were violating Federal probation by being out there. Needless to say, some violations ensued.
One of the protestors frequently parked his pick up truck in the handicapped spot and put a large American flag in one of the post holes in the back. He was trying to prevent women from being dropped off in that spot so they could get past the "sidewalk counselors" on their way into the clinic. I noticed that he did not have handicapped plates nor a placard, so I called the campus police out on the problem every time he parked there. He was cited several times over the period of time we were escorting and I must say that the campus police hated to be called over there. Lots of negative attitudes about having to get wrapped up in all that. Can't say as I blame them much.
A typical escort went like this: A car would arrive in the lot and park. A friend and I (we sometimes had as many as four show up out there, but it was usually me and another guy) would approach the car. "We are not with these people. Would you like an escort past them?" If yes, we would walk in front of them toward the building. If not, we would wish them well and step away.
Now, I should note here that I'm a big man and I've played basketball in some interesting places. I'm used to elbows being thrown and comments made to make me lose my poise. I'm also a lousy free throw shooter and play better defense than offense.
On our way to the front of the building, we were verbally abused and accused of some interesting perversions. Various medical diagnoses were also bandied about such as AIDS and herpes. We were called homosexuals, which we were not, not that it mattered to us at all. People walked into us deliberately in order to claim that we assaulted them. They walked in front of us and then suddenly stopped for the same purpose.
In between escorts, I attempted to engage the protestors in friendly conversations. "Hey, what do you think the Charger's chances are this year?" for example. No responses from any of them. They spent their time accusing each other of being backsliders and of not doing enough for Jesus. Occasionally, someone we were escorting made a rude comment toward one of the zealots despite our friendly advice to ignore them. When this occurred, the person insulted immediately looked up in the sky as if to make sure God scored that properly ("Mark it zero, Donny!"). We started to call these scores "Jesus Points" and sometimes asked them how many they got on a typical Saturday.
These crazy folks would approach everyone and start to scream "Don't kill your baby!" and other interesting things. They once accosted a woman who was taking her daughter, who appeared to be about twelve years old, to the dentist!
One of these delightful people was Cheryl Sullenger. She screamed at us and the people we were escorting. She was an unpleasant person to spend your Saturday morning with, that's for sure.
One Saturday morning, we arrived only to find the faithful looking, well, sort of guilty. They were mighty puzzled about something and it turned out that the something was why the building was still standing. Yup, dear Cheryl and her loving husband plotted to blow the place up but the device didn't go off as they'd prayed for it to do. So, they went to prison, the clinic moved to a place under La Mesa Police jurisdiction and things settled down after the passage of the law about clinic protests.
Fast forward to yesterday when I read that Cheryl Sullenger's phone number was in the car of Dr. Tiller's assassin. This is not a coincidence as Cheryl is about as anti-abortion as it is possible to be. A quick Google of her name will suffice to support that description. If Cheryl's number was in that car, she is connected to the crime. She is guilty of something if I know her and I do. It's been a while, but she's only gotten worse.
